This picturesque beach getaway is ideal for a family holiday in South Africa that is the ultimate in sunshine, sea and sand. It is conveniently close to the King Shaka International Airport, and a huge array of glitzy malls and cosmopolitan restaurants.

Salt Rock is a charming seaside village in the northern parts of the KwaZulu Natal coastline; a picturesque beach getaway that is ideal for families that want the ultimate in sunshine, sea and sand. It is conveniently perched just 30 minutes from the metropolis of Durban, which is home to the King Shaka International Airport, and a huge array of glitzy malls and cosmopolitan restaurants.

Salt Rock was once the home of King Shaka, ruler of the ancient Zulu tribes that lived off this land. His maidens would come to this region to collect salt for the king’s home and to use as a currency with traders. Today, though, it is the scenic beaches and tidal pools that continue to lure visitors back year after year.

These beaches are perfect for long, lazy days spent tanning, playing ball, tossing a Frisbee, or heading into the water for a surf. Near the main beach, there is a reef that yields a great swell for those who want to while away the summer days on a board. These waters are also fabulous for stand-up paddling, snorkelling and rowing. The huge tidal pool and the rock pools make for fun places for little ones to play and enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. There are gorgeous shells lying on the beach, waiting for eager hands to collect them. There are also schools of bottlenose dolphins that playfully surf the waves and leap from the water while swimmers and other onlookers enjoy the show.

Life guards are on duty to ensure that the swimmers are kept as safe as possible.

Ballito is close to Salt Rock, and is home to a number of irresistible restaurants and plenty of shops. Keen golfers will not be disappointed as they have a number of golf courses from which to choose in this area.

Families with children will love a visit to the Flag Farm Animal Farm in Salt Rock. This sanctuary is home to more than 1 000 animals that include reptiles, birds, alpacas and even wolves. The vast majority of the animals have been rescued and many of them are available for a cuddle from their human visitors. There is an inviting tea garden here too.

Salt Rock is a gorgeous retreat that feels a million miles from the big city, but enjoys all of the conveniences of having one as its nearby neighbour.
